SICILY. Messana. 425-421 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 17.24 g, 12 h). The nymph Messana, wearing long chiton and holding reins in both hands, driving biga of mules to right; above, Nike alighting right on reins to crown the mules with a wreath; in exergue, laurel leaf with berries. Rev. MEΣ-Σ-A-N-ΙΟ-Ν Hare springing to right; below, dolphin right. Caltabiano Series XIII, 492 (D200/R201). Dewing 653 (same dies). HGC 2, 787. SNG ANS 359 (same obverse die). SNG Lockett 828 (same dies). Nicely toned and of lovely Classical style. Struck from slightly worn dies and with light marks, otherwise, good very fine.
